Driver hits woman pulling kids in wagon on MN street, flees; 1 child badly hurt

A driver plowed into a woman pulling her children in a wagon in a Twin Cities intersection and fled the scene, leaving one of the kids severely injured, officials said.

The incident occurred about 8:20 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Mitchell Road and Chestnut Drive in Eden Prairie, police said.

A Police Department report obtained by the Minnesota Star Tribune listed the injured victims as Spogmai Kamawal and her children, 2-year-old Somaia and 11-month-old Samir. The family lives less than a half-mile from the crash scene, the report said.

Somaia was in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to HCMC. Spogmai Kamawal and Samir were treated at the hospital and released, police said.

“Our hearts are with this family during what is an unimaginably difficult time,” read a statement from Police Sgt. Bryan Dean. “This type of reckless and tragic act will not go unanswered. We are committed to finding the individual responsible and holding them fully accountable.”

The woman was in the crosswalk while crossing Mitchell Road near Pheasant Woods Park. She had four children with her, two of them in a wagon she was pulling.

A white car heading north on Mitchell struck Spogmai Kamawal and Samir and Somaia in the wagon before it kept going. A piece of a car mirror was left at the scene.
