The Austin football team couldn’t match the push of Fairmont as it lost its Homecoming game 57-13 in a contest that started on Friday night, but was finished on Saturday afternoon due to a lightning delay at Art Hass Stadium.
The Packers were held to -28 yards on the ground and they allowed six passing plays of 15 yards or more. The Cardinals (3-1 overall) completely broke the game open when they scored three defensive touchdowns in a span of two minutes to make it 57-0 early in the third quarter.
“We were focused on stopping their run and those passing plays were obviously big plays, and so were those three turnovers that led to touchdowns,” Austin head coach Ed Schmitt said.
Austin was trailing 16-0 in the second quarter when the game was put on hold due to lightning. The game resumed on Saturday at noon.
The Packers made some big plays in the first quarter as Rob Lillis had a pair of early sacks and Matthew Oldenkamp hauled in a 27-yard pass. The Packer defense also stopped the Cardinals on a fourth and two at the Austin eight-yard line to stay within 7-0 in the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the Packers went three-and-out after the stop and the Falcons blocked a punt for a safety to go up 9-0. On Fairmont’s next possession, the Cardinals went up 16-0 after Joe Long hit Landon Traetow for a 33-yard TD pass.
While Austin came out aggressive on defense, Schmitt didn’t think the game being delayed for 16 hours was the reason things were tough on Saturday.
“I think the physicality of the game wore us out. It wasn’t the delay or anything,” Schmitt said. “We lost a couple of players from last night because they were banged up and weren’t able to go. Fairmont has a very physical team and they’re a good program.”
Austin (1-3 overall) will now turn to the second half of its season as it looks to gain traction, starting at Planview-Elgin-Millville at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We’re just trying to get one percent better each day,” Schmitt said. “I know the scoreboard didn’t show it, but there are improvements that we’re making on a day to day basis.”
