Classic 80s Sci-Fi Video Game Getting Major Movie Adaptation

A Space Invaders movie is officially in development, with New Line enlisting the help of two screenwriters to turn the iconic video game into a movie.

What is the latest 80s video game getting a movie?

According to a new report from Deadline, screenwriters Ben Zazove and Evan Turner (The Out-Laws) have been tapped to write the movie, which will be inspired by the video game. There’s been no word on the exact specifics of the movie, so it’s unclear just how the movie will approach adapting the video game for a movie.

Originally released in 1978 and published by Japanese company Taito for arcades, Space Invaders is one of the most iconic video games of all time. The game revolves around defeating waves of descending aliens with a laser that moves horizontally along the bottom part of the screen. Space Invaders was not only the first video game with an endless gameplay loop, but also the first fixed shooter.

To date, Space Invaders is considered one of the most influential video games of all time and is often credited as helping usher in the golden age of arcade video games. The game was a massive commercial success. By 1982, it had grossed over $3.8 billion, and it still ranks as the second-highest-grossing arcade video game of all time, behind Pac-Man.
